In the early 1990s, light-emitting diodes (LED) light was used by NASA to find ways to grow plants in space. Scientists found that red LED light helped promote growth and photosynthesis of plant cells.
LED light therapy was then studied for its potential application in medicine and found to have many benefits to human skin. LED light therapy is different from laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapies because it doesn’t cause damage to the skin surface. LED light therapy bypasses this harsh step by directly stimulating regeneration of the skin.
