In the world of pigmentation there are a plethora of conditions that can be treated by laser. Lasers produce a specific wavelength which target a specific chromophore, or color, within the skin. In the most rudimentary sense, pigment lasers can be divided into the treatment of reds (vascular) and browns (pigmentation).
The chromophore that is targeted in vascular lesions is the red blood cell. There are several lasers that target red blood cells, including PDL, KTP, IPL and long pulseND:YAG. All work effectively to reduce vascular lesions. The more superficial the lesion, the better the result. Depending on the type of lesion, either one or multiple treatments may be required for optimal results.
The chromophore that is targeted in pigmented lesions is melanin. There are several lasers that target melanin, but these lasers can be divided into two categories: pigment specific and skin resurfacing. In general, most patients opt for the laser that will accomplish both, i.e. pigment correction and skin tightening.
At Bourget Medical Aesthetics and Wellness both are offered. IPL and QS Nd:YAG for pigment correction. CO2 Fractional and Er:YAG for pigment correction and skin resurfacing. Dr. Bourget reviews and discusses with each patient the appropriate treatment to address his or her concerns.
If a mole develops irregular borders, bleeding or a sudden increase in size a consultation with a dermatologist is recommended before considering laser removal.
