Body Contouring

Body contouring is a polite term for getting rid of unwanted fat. There are a plethora of modalities on the market to address this. Traditional liposuction was the gold standard for fat removal. Unwanted fat cells are mechanically suctioned into a canister for disposal. Now the spectrum of modalities includes everything from cryolipolysis to acoustic wave therapy.

Other than liposuction, all of these therapies are contingent on apoptosis. Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death, or “cellular suicide.” The cells are programmed to die and then are reabsorbed by the body. But the amount of apoptosis can not be controlled and there will be varying amounts of reabsorbed fat cells. This is why several sessions are needed to accomplish desired results.

What has replaced traditional liposuction is laser lipolysis. This is traditional liposuction aided by laser to accomplish the same results but is less invasive. This marriage of the two is known as SmartLipo.
