The prevalence of tattoos has steadily increased, and consequently, so has the demand for tattoo removal grown.  Early methods of tattoo removal often resulted in painful scarring and inadequate ink removal.  Results of tattoo removal improved dramatically with the advent of Q-switched lasers. 

What is Q-Switched laser?

For over 20-years, the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser has been the laser of choice for removing tattoos. The dual wavelengths (1064nm/532nm) remove a wide array of tattoo pigments.  Q-switched lasers are lasers that deliver high-power pulses in the nanosecond range. This method of quick delivery acts similar to a jackhammer breaking up a cement sidewalk.

How do tattoo removal lasers work?

The principle behind laser tattoo removal is based on converting laser energy to heat which selectively destroys tattoo ink.  The Q-switched delivery system then fragments the tattoo particles into smaller particles. These minute particles are then absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system.  The surrounding skin remains unaffected.

Yet not all ink colors are absorbed equally, rendering some ink particles to remain in the skin, albeit less visible.  It is important that a detailed tattoo history is taken prior to the procedure, so that patient expectations can be met.  Results are cumulative and often require several treatments to obtain desired results.
