Understanding Male Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Keep you muscle mass, energy and sexual health!  Male hormone replacement therapy can make you feel like a new person! Read below to learn more about what is can do for you.

Male hormone therapy, also known as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), is a medical treatment designed to supplement low testosterone levels in men. Testosterone, a key male hormone, is crucial for maintaining various physiological functions, including muscle mass, bone density, red blood cell production, and sexual health. When natural testosterone production declines, either due to aging, medical conditions, or other factors, male hormone therapy can help restore balance and improve overall well-being.

This article explores the various uses of hormone replacement therapy and details the medications often used in treatment.

HRT Male Hormone Therapy

Uses of Male Hormone Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy for men is primarily used to treat hypogonadism, a condition characterized by insufficient testosterone production. Symptoms of low testosterone can include fatigue, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, mood changes, and cognitive decline. By restoring testosterone levels, HRT can alleviate these symptoms and enhance quality of life.

In addition to treating hypogonadism, male hormone therapy may also be used in specific cases to address other health issues. For example, testosterone therapy can help improve bone density in men with osteoporosis and may be considered as part of a treatment plan for certain chronic conditions, such as HIV/AIDS or cancer, where muscle wasting is a concern. Additionally, hormone replacement therapy is sometimes used to aid in gender-affirming care for transgender men.

Common Treatments Used

These are some but not all of the treatments we use. Dr. Judy does not use synthetic products and customizes everyone’s treatments specifically to each patients needs, so treatments used can change.

AndroGel Testosterone Gel

AndroGel is a topical testosterone gel applied directly to the skin. It is one of the most commonly prescribed forms of testosterone replacement therapy. AndroGel is typically applied to the upper arms, shoulders, or abdomen, where the skin absorbs the hormone. This method offers a steady and consistent release of testosterone throughout the day, helping to maintain stable hormone levels. Users must follow specific application guidelines to prevent accidental transfer to others, such as family members or pets.

Axiron Testosterone Gel

Axiron is another topical testosterone gel, distinct in its application method. Unlike AndroGel, Axiron is applied to the underarms using a special applicator. This form of hormone replacement therapy is convenient for men who prefer a different application site. As with all topical treatments, it’s important to avoid direct skin contact with others after application to prevent unintended transfer of the hormone.

Androderm Patch

The Androderm patch is a transdermal system that delivers testosterone through the skin. It is typically applied to the back, abdomen, thighs, or upper arms. The patch provides a continuous release of testosterone over 24 hours, making it a convenient option for men who prefer not to use gels daily. However, users may experience skin irritation at the application site, and it is crucial to rotate the placement of the patch to minimize this risk.

Natesto Nasal Spray

Natesto is a unique testosterone replacement therapy administered via a nasal spray. This method involves applying the spray inside the nostrils three times a day, providing a more discreet and convenient option for testosterone delivery. Natesto’s nasal application reduces the risk of transferring the hormone to others through skin contact, a common concern with topical gels and patches.

Testosterone Cypionate Injections

Testosterone cypionate is an injectable form of testosterone that is administered intramuscularly. Typically, injections are given every one to two weeks, depending on the individual’s treatment plan. This form of hormone replacement therapy can provide a more consistent and controlled release of testosterone, although some men may experience fluctuations in hormone levels between injections. Injectable testosterone is a preferred option for those who prefer less frequent dosing compared to daily topical treatments.

Clomiphene Citrate/ Clomid

Clomiphene citrate, commonly known as Clomid, is a medication that is used for the treatment of infertility of both women and men.  In women, it is used to induce ovulation in those women that do not develop and release an egg (ovulate) on their own.

In men, it has been used for the treatment of hypogonadism since the 1970s. It acts in the brain to increase secretion of two hormones (LH and FSH), which in turn, increase testosterone production. Unlike testosterone replacement therapy, Clomid does not suppress the brain hormones related to testosterone production, thus preserving intratesticular  production of testosterone and sperm. This is especially useful in treating hypogonadal men who are interested in starting a family.  Although results are mixed, many studies show Clomid reduces symptoms in hypogonadal men. Studies have also shown improvement in erectile function and bone density, as well as weight loss.
